The  Indianised  name  of  this  plant  is  ' Corumbi '  which  later  was  metamorphosed  to   Columbi  and  in  Bengal  its  popularly  known  as  ' Kolmi '.  The  botanical  name  is  Ipomoea  reptans  (Linn.).  Family  Convolvulaceae.  During  the  rainy  season  the  leaves  produces  a  sticky  substance  that  gives  birth  to  pests  and  remains  till  the  advent  of  autumn.  According  to  ayurveda  consumption  of  coloumbi  is  prohibited  from  the  day  of  the  return  festival  or  ' Ulto  Rath '  of  Lord  Jagannath    till  the  last  full  moon  in  the  month  of  November.  This  leafy  vegetable  has  various  qualities.  But  it  is  during  the  period  stated  above  when  all  its  good  qualities  are  absent  or  lost  and  preferably  not  be  consumed.   This  leafy  vegetable  helps  reduce  the  acidity   or  rather  keeps  it  at  a  reduced  level.  The  Charak  sutra  tells  us  that  any  consumption  of  leafy  vegetable  disturbs  the  equillibrium    within  the  body,  however  it  would  serve  the  purpose  far  better  if  it  is  first  boiled  in  hot  water  and  then  consumed   by  removing  it  from  the  water  in  which  it  was  boiled  which  destroys  the  bad  effects.   The  Chemical  composition  of  the  plant  is  as  follows:-  Columbi  or  kolmi  contains  Hydrocarbons  viz.  Pentairiacotane  triacontance,  Sterol,  Acids  viz.  melissic  acid,  butyric  acid  and  myristic  acid.  Essdential  oil  -  0.048%  and  last  of  all  various  types  of  Resin  -  7.27%.  Colombi  has  various  applications  a  few  of  which  is  given :-  (1)  The  kolmi  juice  to  a  certain  extant  helps  to  control  or  reduce  the  over  reactions  from  opium.  (2)  During  uncontrolled  discharge  at  night  in  early  youthful  vigour  associated  with  headache,  dyspepsia,  burning  sensation  on  hands  and  feet,  excessive  watery  mouth  or  lack  of  concentration  kolmi  mixed  with  ' Withania  somnifera  Dunalor  Aswagandha  can  be  very  useful.  (3)  Iis  a  fact  that  there  are  infants  who  sleeps  during  the  day  time  and  prefers  to  remain  awake  at  night  which  becomes  truely    painful  for  the  mothers  since  she  has  to  be  careful  to  her  child  throughout  and  needs  rest  too.  This  could  be  for  various  reasons  and  one  of  them  might be  from  constipation.  In  such  instances  a  few  drops  of  kolmi  juice  with  milk  might  be  helpful  but  the  parents  of  the  child  should  be  extra  careful  about  mentaining  the  best  of  hygene  before  applying  and  taking  necessary  medical  advice.  (4)  The  juice  from  this  plant  is  also  effective  during  chicken  pox.  Ayurveda  states  that  one  to  two  teaspoon  full  of  the  juice  along  with  milk  acts  as    a  preventive  measure  to  a  certain  extent.  (5)  Ipomoea  Reptans  also  inhibits  lactation  for  lactating  mothers  if  they  are  facing  any  problem  of  insufficiency  while  feeding.  A  small  part  mixed  with  warm  ghee  (clarified  butter)  twice  daily  is  helpful  but  it  should  be  taken  under  advice.   (6)  When  a  small  quantity  of  four  to  five  teaspoon  juice  of  this  plant  mixed  with  clarified  butter  is  taken  twice  daily  it  helps  to  reduce  the  pain  burning  sensation  and  formation  of  pus  in  gonorroea  to  a  certain  extent.  (7)  A  thin  paste  if  applied  when  bitten  by  wasp  or  hornet  or  a  honey  bee  considerably  reduces  the  burning  sensation.

The Division Of Plant Kingdom - 14

The  Kingdom  Of  Plants

Since  the  ancient  times  the  plant  kingdom  have  been  divided  according  to  their  shapes  utility  habitat  and  use  in  the  early  texts  in.  But  it  has  been  done  mostly  depending  on  their  usefulness  or  utility.  But  gradually  as  there  were  few  who  had  profound  knowledge  of  the  same  or  due  to  dearth  of  a  proper  library  on  the  subject  stood  as  an  impediment  to  the  researchers  to  follow  up.  During  the  modern  times  plenty  of  research  work  have  been  done  in  the  west.  Depending  on  the  fruits  flowers  shapes  or  similarities  the  plant  kingdom  has  been  divided  and  subdivided  accordingly  by  the  botanists  or  researchers  which  has  been  accepted  world  wide.  Researchers  in  the  west  are  of  the  opinion  that  the  early  division  on  the  plant  kingdom  was  done  by  a  Greek  philosopher  named  Theophrastus  sometimes  during  370  to  245  BC  and  more  than  fifteen  hundred  years  later  this  division  among  plants  were  vastly  improvised  by  LinnaeusPresently  there are  two  systems  that  are  in  use  by  the  scientists,  one  being  the  system  incorporated  by  Bentham  &  Hooker   and  the  other  by  Engler  and  Prantl.  The  one  by  Bentham  &  Hooker  is  in  use  in  India  and  England  and  the  other  is  in  use  in  Germany  and  some  other  European  countries.  But  Rendle  and  Hutchinson  has  been  somewhat  more  elaborate  on  their  division  of  plants.  The  Engler  and  Prantl  system  has  thirteen  divisions  but  we  shall  be  dealing  with  the  Bentham  &  Hooker  system  as  that  is  accepted   in  India.  Hooker  in  his  Genera  Plantarum  has  divided  the  plants  into  two  hundred  natural  order  or  familiy :-  Plant  Kingdom  --  (a)  Cryptogams  and  (b)  Phanerogams.   Cryptogams  ---  (1)  Thallophyta  (2)  Bryophyta  (3)  Pteridophyta.  The  phanerogams  are  divided into  --- (1)  Angiosperms  (2)  Gymnosperms.  Thallophyta  are  again  subdivided  into  (a)  Bacteria  &  Fungi  (b)  Algae  (c)  Lichens.  The  Bryophyta  are  subdivided  into  (a)  Liverworts  (b)  Mosses.  The  Pteridophyta  are  subdivided  to  Fern  and  fern  allies.  The  Angiosperms   are  subdivided  into (a) Dicotyledon  and   (b)  Monocotyledon.  The  divisions  and  the  subdivisions  above  provides  a  short description  of  the  various  sections  they  are  divided  into.  Every  tree  has  a  generic  and  a  specific  name.  The  specific  name  more  often  is  used  as  an  adjective  of  the  genus,  like  Pinus  Longifolia.  The  word  Longifolia  indicates long  leaf  Pinus  tree.  So  the  term  Longifolia  appears  to  be  an  adjective  of  Pinus.  At  times  the  specific  name  is  applied  in  the  name  of  the  identifier  or  a  renouned  botanist  of  the  particular  tree  like  Meconopsis  Wallichii  Hook.  This  system  of  dual  name  is  what  we  know  as  Binomial  Nomenclature.   It  is  still  the  most  widely  accepted  form  since  the  time  of  Linneus.

The word Ayurveda if we break up its 'Ayu' which means life and 'Veda' means knowledge so 'Ayurveda' should actually mean the knowledge of life. This is just in one simple word but its not that simple as it meets the eye as because it happens to be a treasure trove which takes years for having a thorough knowledge over the subject.
My readers might be confused since my blog heading begins with ‘Plants’ but its dealing in ‘Ayurveda’. what actually I would do is to go to a very limited extent on  the subject ‘Ayurveda’ before returning back to plants since Ayurveda is intricately related to plants so as plants are related to Ayurveda. I would gradually mention the medicinal importance of certain plants  and its necessity.
The origin of Ayurveda can be traced in 'Atharvaveda'. This veda bears the testimony of the knowledge of our ancient 'Muniis' and the 'Rishies' on the importance usefulness and  necessities of plants and herbs for people. It can be said that 'Atharvaveda' gave birth to Ayurveda through the pen of ;Dhanwantari'. (I shall dwell on 'Dhanwantari' a little later).  Gradually  Ayurveda gave birth to medical science. The ancient texts are completely lost, however the only texts that are still  existing  are ‘Charak Samhita’ ‘Susruta Samhita’ and 'Astangahridoy Samhita'  by  'Rajbhatt'. They  were writers who lived during the vedic times. Both of their work Charak and Susruta have been translated into Arabic but there was a Latin and a German translation for the works of Susruta. India is said to be rich in her natural resources begining from the the Himalayas till the very end Cape Comorin.
Since the ancient times Ayurvda has been in use for the welfare of mankind not only in India but in other parts of the world too but with the advent of western medicine the importance gradually declined to such an extent it threatened the very existence of Ayurveda. In ancient times the vedic Rishis too were well versed with benefits of these medicinal plants.
After Dhanwantari created or rather gave birth to Ayurveda in later years great Rishies viz. 'Atreya' 'Vardwaj'  and 'Agnivesh' penned down a number of medicas for the treatment and  welfare of mankind. With the help of those invaluable books Rishi 'Charak' wrote 'Charak Samhita' to relieve people form their ailments and suffering. Now let  me say  a few words  on 'Dhanwantari'.   Dhanwantari is the physician of Gods who was produced at the churning of the ocean. He was a teacher  of ancient medicine and Ayurveda is attributed to him. In another birth he was the son of ‘Dirghatamas’  and his  nature  was exempt  from human  infirmities  and  in  every  existence he  has  been the  master  of  ‘Universal  Knowledge’.
He  is  also  called  ‘Sudha  Pani’  carrying  necter  in  his  hands  and  ‘Amrita’. Susrutha  is  the  son  of  the  great  Rishi  ‘Viswamitra’  and  legend  says  that  he  sent  his  son  Susrutha  to  Dhanwantary  to   learn  Ayurveda  and  after completing his  education  the  book  he  penned  down  came  be   known  as  ‘Susrutha Samhita’.  The  two  books  Charak  samhita  and  Susruhta  samhita  are  a  complete  medical  guide  that  deals  in  surgery,  anatomy,  selection  of  medicines  and  its  applications. Among the ancient texts which dealt extensibly with the process of treatment and  the utilities  of  medicinal  plants  are  the Astangahriday  samhita by  Rajvatta,  the  collections  of  ‘Chakradutt  and  Sarngdhar’  and  ‘Vaabprakash  by  Vaabmisra’.  There  were  a  few  others  too.  During  the  muslim rule  some  practioners  penned  a  few  valuable  books  on  the  plant  or  herbal  medicines  notably  among  them  were ‘Taleep  Sherief  and  Makhazan – ul – Adwiya’  during  the  medival  ages.

Research By Dr. Roxburgh And Dr.John Flemming - 2

An  Ancient  Text

In 16th  and  17th  centuries  the Portuguese  and  other medival  practioners  too  have  written  extensively  on  ayurveda. Amongst  the  important ones in  southern India  ‘Hortus Indicus  Malabaricus’  by  Van  Rheede  was  well  renouned  which  had  twelve  volumes    and  there   were  several  other  western  writers  too,  notably  among  them  were  ‘Thomas  Rivevs,  O. Kerbosa,  L. De Costa,  Wight,  Beddome  etc.  The  18th  and  19th  centuries was  a  glorious  period  since  a  number  of  invaluable  books  were  written  by  the  western  scholars  after  a  painstaking  research  by  them  thereby  making  it  amply  easier  for  the  present  day  researchers. Notably  the  first  and  formost  among  them  was  Dr. Roxburgh who  was  a  ‘Father’  figure  in  the  identification  of  plants. His  ‘Flora  Indica’  happens  to  be  a  treasure  trove  which  has  dealt  extensively  about  their  native  and  scientific  names,  description,  places  where  they  are  found  and   importance.  Later  in 1810  Dr. John  Flemming  published  ‘Asiatic  Research’  a  magazine  detailing  in  Hindustani  as  well  as  Sanskrit  names. The  ‘Materia  Medica’  by  Dr. Ainslie,  Moodeen  Sheriff,  Dr. Wight  and  Dr. Dymock are  priceless  texts. There  are  few  other  equally  important  region  based  texts  too. Notable  among  them  were  Dr. Birdwoods  book  based  on  plants  found  in  Bombay/Maharastra,  Dr. Drury’s  text  on  plants  in  Madras  region  and  Dr. Baden  Powell’s  text  ‘Punjab  Products’. The  ‘Indigenous  Drugs’  by  ‘Raibahadur’  Kanailal  Dey  was  another  renouned  text. There  were  few more  texts viz. "Hortus Suberbanus   Calcuttensis"  by  Dr.  Voigt,  "Flora  Of  British  Indica"  by  Sir. J.D.Hooker, "Bengal  Plants"  by  Sir, David  Prain,  but  notably  among  these  were  "The  Indian Materia  Medica"  by  Dr. Nandkarni  and  "Vonousodhi  Dwarpan"  by  the  noted  Kaviraj  (Ayurvedic  Practioner)  Viraajacharan  Gupta  "Kavyatirth".  So  far  I  have  discussed  about  various  texts  by  various  scholars  the  Muniis  and  the  Rishis etc. Now  I  shall go  in  some  more  details  on  the  main  topic. As  we  know  the  people  on  earth  got themselves  adapted  to  the  climate and  the  place  they  started  living  in since  the  ancient  times. Gradually  they  have  built  up  their  own  society  or  community,  they  have  their  own  languages  and  have  developed  their  food  habits  accordingly  which  we  see  today. Just  as  an  example  the  people  who  live  near  the  desert  region  have  one  way  of  leading  their  life  so  as  the  people  who  live  in  high  altitude  near  mountains  and  so  as  the  people  on  the  plains.  They  are completely  different  to  one  another  in  their  living  style. Exatly  so  to  our  plant kingdom. They  too have  got  themselves  adapted  accordingly  to  their  choice. We  find  mention  to  this  in  Rig  Yajur  the  Atharva  veda  and  in  "Vriksayurveda"  in period  of  "Samhitas".Beginning  from  the  twelvth  chapter  and  80th  sutra  continuing  for  the  entire  chapter  in  Yajur  Veda,  in  some  parts  of  the  Rig  Veda  and  in  Atharva  Veda  we  come  accross  Vaidic  guru  "Soma"  (I  shall  come  to  Soma  later)  the  king  of  plant  kingdom to  whom  the  entire  kingdom  surrenders  and  tells  their  virtues  after  being  asked. Being  highly  satisfied  Soma  asks  them  if  they  are  prepared  to  spread  world  wide  for  the  welfare  of  mankind  to  which  they  consent. There  are  detailed  description  in  the  texts  regarding  the  places  that  would  be  ideal  or  suitable  for  them  for  its  natural  growth  and  moreover  there  are  excerpts  stating  the  plants  that  would  become  natural  food  for  herbivores. Thereafter  they  dedicate  themselves  and  tells  "Soma"  "Vutartha  praninang  pranahh   voyang" which  means  please  present  us  for  the  welfare  of  living  beings.  On  hearing  this  Soma  humbly  submits  to  the  Rishis  "vutarth  chintangchodoyeth"  please  dedicate  them  for  the  welfare  of  the  living  beings.

The Influence Of Sun On Life - 3

Sun  The  Source  Of  Life

So  its  amply  clear  that  to  be  an  expert  on  plants  and  herbs  for  treatment,  knowledge  on  'Soma  Vidya'  or  thorough  conception  on  plants  and  herbs  would  be  essential   since  Soma  is  the  king  of  plant  kingdom  and  who  inturn  is  directly  under  the  influence  of  solar  energy  or  the  Sun.  So  the  first  and  foremost  thing  would  be  to  know  'Souro Vidya'  or  the  influence  of  the  sun  next  is  'Soma  Vidya'  knowledge  on  plants  and  herbs  and  the  third  would  be  'Raj  Vidya'  or  the  knowledge  on  geography  for  proper  application  of  herbal  medicines.  The  effect  of  solar  energy  is  a  very  vital  part  in  ayurveda  since  it  describes  in  detail  how  the  plant  kingdom  gets  influenced  by   other  planets  and  nakshatras  and  the  nature  and  quality  of  the  soil  of  its  habitation.  An  example  will  make  it  easier  there  are  various  types  of  flowers  whose  natural  habitat  is  water  but  interestingly  Lotus  blossoms  only  during  the  day  time  and  white  water  lily  (kumud  flower) during  night.  They  are  found  in  the  same  place  yet  their  nature  is  diametrically opposite  one  is  effected  by  light  and  the  other  by  darkness  and  quite  obviously  their  medicinal  application  would  be  different.  This  comes  under  'Souro  Vidya'.  Souro  vidya  Soma  Vidya  and  Raj  Vidya  together  came  to  be  known  as  "Tridhatu  Vidya"  during  the  time  of  Samhitas.  However  this  Tridhatu  vidya  or  the  science  of  'Tridhatu'  is  not  clearly  mentioned  in  the  vedas  except  in  the  1st  the  3rd  and  the  6th  sutras  of  Rigveda:-  "Trirno  aswina  divyani  vesajang  sung  jo  soma  tejasa  jath  sadastang  tridhatu  sarma  vardhatang".  This  tridhatu  is  'vaiyu'  which  means  air,  'pitta'  which  means  bile  and  'kafa'  which  means  phlegm.  Ayurvedic  treatment  is  done  taking  to  consideration  these  three  things.  Now  I  shall  come  to  Soma  (See  king  of  all  plants  post  6  Introduction  To  Hindu  Mythology).  Soma  is  the  juice  of  a  milky  climbing  plant  (Asclepias  acida)  extracted  and  fermented  forming  a  beverage  which  is  offered  in  libations  to  deities  and  drunk  by  Brahmans.  The  exhilerating  qualities  were  grateful  to  the  priests  and  gods  were  thought  as  equally  fond  of  it.  This  Soma  juice  occupies  a  large  space  in  Rigveda  and  one  Mandala  is  almost  fully  dedicated  to  its  praise  and  use.  It  has  been  raised  to  the  position  of  a deity  and  represented  to  be  all - powerful  primeval,  healer  of  all  diseases, bestower  of  riches,    and  even  identified  with  the  supreme  being.
The  people  then  whose  religion  was  worship  of  wonderful  powers  and  phenomenon  of  nature  perceived  that  this  liquid  has  extraordinary  power  to  elevate  the  spirit  and  produce  a  temporary  frenzy  under  whose  influence  the  individual  was  prompted  to  and  capable  of  doing  things  beyond  his  natural  powers.  They  found  in  it  something  divine,  it  was  to  their  apprehension  "A  God"  endowing  those  into  whom  it  entered  with  godlike  powers.  The  plant  which  afforded  it  came  to  be  known  as  the  "King  Of  Plants".  The  process  of  preparing  it  was  a  holy  sacrifice,  the  instruments  used  for  it  were  sacred.  Now  coming  back  to  the  point  the  ancient  ayurvedists  found  a basic equilibrium  among  the  living  things  and  in  plants  for  their  healthiness  where  nature had  a  profound  effect.  Discord  is  the  prime  reason  which  gave  rise  to  diseases.  Oneness  with  nature  would  in  effect  help  to  lead  a  robust  life  and  going  against  the  nature  would  lead  to  illness.  This  is  the  basic  on  which ayurveda  is  based

Shakti Or The Power Of Life - 4

The  Source  Of  Life

Needless to mention here that ayurveda 'shastra' is not only the ancient text in India but it is the earliest text of science and knowledge in the history of mankind. The Taittriya upanishad says:- 'Pranangdeva anuprananty vidyangsodeva  manusyapaswaschase; pranohi vutanang aiyuh. Tasmath sarvaiyusmucchante sarvameva ayuryanti. Ye pranang brahmopasate'.  The  supreme  creator  works  through  the  shakti  or  power  of  life.  The  learned are  god.  Human  beings  and  animals  sustain  by  the  help  of  'prana  shakti'  or  energy  of  life.  Life  actually  is  the  'aiyu'  or  longivity.  Thats  the  reason  why  life  is  known  as  'sarvaiyu'  or  universal  longivity.  Those  who  worship  life  as  'Brahma'  begets  full  life  since  life  itself  is  longivity.  Hence  the  veda  that  deals  with  life  is  ayurveda.
Now  I  shall  discuss  an  interesting  aspect,  its  the  relationship  of  mind  with  the  self  through  the  eyes  of  ayurveda.  The   ayurvedic  principles  states  during  pregnancy  the  child  inherits  the  mind  from  the  mother  and  memory  and  merits  from  the  father,  so  this  is  genetics  where  character  is  transmitted  through  the  genes  and  apart  from  this  the society   and  environment  has  a  profound  impact  too.  There  were  a  few  ancient  texts  that  dealt  with  the  mind  viz.  'Upadhenav  samhita',  'Parasor  samhita',  'Attri  samhita',  and  a  few  others  but  however  they  didnt  find  much  relevance  in  the  Charak  and  Susruta  samhita.  However  the  Charak  samhita  gradually  underwent  metamorphosis  later  in  the  years  under  the  hands  of  the  then  scholars  or  researchers  where  in  certain  instances  influences  of  'Konas'  ideology,  or  'Tantra'  ideology  or  the  relevance  of  Buddhism can  be  observed  thereby  giving  a  totally  new  identity  to  itself.  But  the  susruta  samhita  remains  at a  safe  distance  from  charak  samhita. Interestingly  the  creaters  of  both  the  samhitas  acknowledged  the  three 'gunaas'  or  elementary  principles  as  natural.  They  are  'satwa  guuna'  the  quality  of  goodness,  the  first  one,  the  second  one  'raja  guuna'  the  elementary  principle  regarding  the  composition  of  nature  and  the  third  one  'tamo  guuna'  the  lowest  of  the  three  elementary  principles  depicting  pride  vanity  haughtiness  etc  in  the  descending  scale.
So  the  sum  total  of  the  three  gunaas  satwa  raja  and  tamo  along  with  place  and  environment  constitutes  the nature  of  a  person.  But  the  constitution  can  never  be  the  same  for  everyone  there  has  to  be  a  basic difference.  Susruta  considers  the  three  basic  ingridients  as  'vaiyu'  which  is  air,  'pitta'  which  is  bile  and  'kafa'  which  is  phlegm  which  makes  up  the  body  and  these  inturn  circumscribes  to  the  three  gunaas  satwa  raja  and  tamo  which  above  all  helps  in  mental  progression.
"Nanavidhani  khalu  sattwanitani  sarvani  eka  purushe  bhavanti  api  n  cha  bhavantek  kalam  ekong  tu  prayo  anubritta"  (Charak  samhita).  The  significance  of  the  above  sloka  is   that  the  presence   or  existence  of  the  three  gunaas  in  the  body  is  natural    but  the  manifestation  of  the  same  occuring  simultanously  at  the  same  time  is   not  possible,  thats  because  of  the  fact  mind  is  pliable  and  gets  easily  moulded  to  the  environment  and  circumstances  the  person  stays  in.  This  in  the  sum  total  helps  in  progression  of  individual  personality.   Both  Charak  and  Susruta  agrees  to  the  fact  that  people  those  who  are  inclined  towards  sattwa  guna   have  seven  characteristics.  Those  who  are  inclined  towards  raja  guna  has  six  and  those  of  tamo  guna  three.  The  seven  characters  of   satwa  guna  are:  Brahmasatya,  Aryasatya,  Oindrasatya,  Yammyasatya,  Varunsatya,  Kayuver  satya   and  Gandharva  satya. That  of  raja  guna  are  Rakshas  nature  or  gluttonous  person,  Asura  nature  or  demon  incarnate,  Pishacha  or  fiendish  nature,  Swarpa  or  snake  like. Need  to  be  mentioned  here  this  has  nothing  to  do  with  reptiles.  The  ayurveda  while  describing  the  nature  by  using  the  word  'swarpa'  did  not  mean  snakes.  Such  type  of  men  are  intelligent  hardworking  has  a  twisted  mind  etc.  Ghostly  (or  preata)  nature.  This  again  has  nothing  to  do  with  spirits  or  ghosts.  The  persons  of  this  nature  belong  to  the  dark  part  of  the  society  usually  are  hoodlums  and  guilty  conscious.  The  last  Shakun  nature  They  are  always  restless  in  nature,  spendthrift,  but  no  eagerness  of  earning,  highly  desirous  without  any   end.

The  Tamo  guna  or  principles  on  the  descending  node  has  three  characters,  the  'Pasav'  or  brutal  nature,  the  next  is  'Matsya'  nature  which  can  be  described  in  someway  as  selfishness,  and  the  last  one  is  'Vanaspattya'  nature.  For  example  if  this  can  be  compared  to  a  tree  then  its  without  any  blossoms.  The  persons  belonging  to  the  pasav  or  brutal  nature  are  mostly  adhered  to  leading  a  wreckless and  indisciplined  way  of  life.  They  always  shy  away  from  taking  responsibilities,  rough  and  rude  in  nature  and  very  inclined  to  sexual  pleasure.  But  Susruta   goes  one  step  further  and   says  to  fulfil  their  sexual  desire  they  are  prepared  to  go  to  any  extent.  The  next  in  line  is  Matsya  nature.  Persons  of  this  type  are  restless  ignorent  and  cowardly  in  nature.  They  are  unable  to  come  to  terms  even  with  similar  type  of  persons  and  get  pleasure  by  inflicting  suffering  on  others  and  has  a  close  affinity  to  water.  They  always  remain  dissatisfied  with  everything.  The  last  one  in  line  is  Vanaspattya.  People  with  this  quality  are  aimless  in  life  and  makes  no  effort  towards  its  fulfilment.  The  one  and  only  thing  they  are  truely  fond  of  is  eating  as  if  thats  their  only  aim  in  life  and  absolutely  disinterested  with  anything  else.  Now  lets  have  an  insight  with  the  nature  of  persons  who  are  influenced  by  vaiyu  or  air,  pitta  or  bile  and  kafa  or  phlegm.  According  to  Susruta  samhita  the   overall  type  of  people  who  are  effected  by  vaiyu  or  air    are  rough  in  nature  and outlook  and  are  self  centered.   They  are  unable  to  accept  success  of  others. They  are  born  jealous   and  rude  in  behaviour  and  ready  to  find  fault  at  others.  They  are  not  prepared  to  trust  anyone  easily  and  always  exhibit  a  restless  state.  However  there  isnt  much  difference  between  Susruta  and  Bagvatta  regarding  these  type  of  men  except  that  Bagvatta  goes  a  step  further  and  states  that  apart  from  being  jealous  by  nature  they  also  have  a  domination  desire  and  perhaps  thats  what  makes  them  rather  aggressive.  The  next  are  those  who  are  effected  by  'pitta'  or  bile.  According  to  Susruta  samhita  these  type  of  men  swet  profusely  and  has  a  foul  odour  in  their  mouth  and  has  a  very  mild  yellowish  tinge  on  their  skin.  Aging  takes  place  rather  quickly  by  untimely loss  of  hair  along  with  wrinkles  on  their  face  and  frequently  suffer  from  oral  and  various  other  diseases.  By  nature  they  have  a  strong  appetite,  but  even  though  short  tempered  they  can  calm  down  easily.  They  are  mostly  intellegent  meritorious  very  straightforward  immensely  energetic  and  hard  working  and  generally  keep  themselves  away  from  vices.  The  third  and  the  last are  the  ones  who  are  effected  by  kafa  or  phlegm.  According  to  Susruta  samhita  people  of  this  kind  involves  both  fair  and  dark  complexioned  ones.  They  have  a  well  defined  structure  and  are  very  good  natured  and  helpful  to  others.  Lust  and  greed  cannot  overpower  them  and  has  great  perseverence.  They  are  always eager  to  know  and  learn  about  new  things  and  usually  reserved.  They  dont  easily  get  affected  by  diseases.
Now  lets  have  a  short  discussion  on  mind  vis-a-vis  ayurveda.  It  says  that  the  memories  are  the  past  experiences  that  lies  embedded  in  the  layers  of  the  mind.  They  guide  us  in  our  daily  life  backed  by  the  experiences  from  the  past.  Charak  says  "Vrikkhyonte karonanastou  smritiryairupajayate ;  nimittarupagrahanat  shadrishat  sabiparyoayat;  sattanubandhat  avassat  gyanoyoagt  punahsrutat;  dristosrutanuvutanang  swamaranat  smritiruchyate"  It  says  that  there are  eight  factors  that  gives  rise  to  the memory.  Whether  its  heard  or  seen  or  felt  it  is  the  eight  factors  that  ultimately  gets  transformed  to  memory.  They  are  (1) reasoning  (2)  nature  (3)  similarity  (4)  dissimilarity  (5)  'sattanubandh'  this  part  of  the  memory  includes  both  similarity  and  dissimilarity. (6)  habit  (7)  repeatedly  hearing  anything  (8)  twelvefold  knowledge  or  in  other  words  gyanyoga.  According  to  'Atreya'  its  not  necessary  that  all  the  eight  factors  must  contribute  as  a  whole.  Reasoning  wit and  intelligence  too  plays  a  more  significant  role  at  times  than  our  sences.  (1)  Coming  back  to  reasoning  the  mind  itself  remains  intimately  entwined  with  reason.  For  instance  when  we  see  smoke  from  a  distance  the  mind  interprets  there  must  be  fire  and  if  there  is  fire  there  will  be  smoke.  When  there  are dark  clouds  on  the  sky  there  will  be  rain.  In  other  words  there  can't  be  rain  without  clouds  or  cloud  without  rain.  This  is  reasoning.  (2)  In  a  very  simple  way  we  can  say  nature  of  anything  gives  birth  to  memory.  When  fire  is  lit  it  removes  darkness,  it  has  heat  energy,  it  can  burn  etc.  The  mind  instantly  flashes  these.  This  is  the  binding  of  nature  with  mind.  (3)  Similarity  can  be  best  described  when  we  observe  a  person  with  a  small  tuft  of  hair  on  the  head  a  sacred  thread  and  a  shawl  around,   the memory  finds  out  the  similarity  and  tells  us  its  a  priest.
