The glory of neem plant can be found in Atharva veda which adduces special importance to it. The ayurveda practitioners gives special stress to the use of this plant during the Spring specifically since the diseases like excessive loose motions dycentry or diorrhoea occurs during this time and lays down the importance of consumption of neem. Neem juice is extremely healthy and helps remove acidity and above all prevents decaying that takes place within due to presence of worms and other factors. Hence Atharva veda proclaims neem is presented for the welfare of mankind. Thus it is amply clear neem is a necessity to all. The observations found in the veda helps us to conclude:- the wind that blows around neem tree is good for health; the neem juice helps in removing the burning sensation of the heart. Considering all other factors the early practitioners utilised this plant for eradication of diseases which is also evident in Charak samhita and further tells that it also drives away the evil. Neem should be kept as a disinfectant inside the room of a newborn. This is only to keep the air inside, the wrappers and the newborn germ free. The bark of the tree is effective in curbing the diseases that are often seen during autmn immediately after rains. During Spring consuming the tender leaves of this plant is an absolute necessity in controlling or reducing the bad effects of an hyperactive bile and phlegm. Use of neem and its effect:- (a) Dyspepsia :- The bark acts a preventive for this disease if taken early in the morning in empty stomach by keeping 4 to 5 grams of it immersed in a cup of hot water throughout the night. (b) Pollutio nocturna :- For those who suffer from this abnormality irrespective of age twentyfive to thirty drops of bark juice taken with little amount of raw milk acts as a good preventive. (c) Repeated urination with itching :- A proper remedy to this would be by taking a teaspoon full of paste containing a piece of raw turmeric along with three to four neem leaves early morning in empty stomach. (d) Diabetes :- Ten pieces of tender leaves with five globules of black pepper taken together early morning in empty stomach acts as a good preventive but a restricted diet needs to be mentained alongside to get an effective result. (e) Vomiting :- During repeated vomiting with traces of blood five to six drops of neem juice added with little milk acts as a good preventive to stop repeated vomiting. (f) Haziness :- When there are symptoms of early cataract or rheuming of the eyes neem juice taken with five to seven drops of milk and a little water prevents further deterioration. (g) Acidity :- Neem powder about 375 mg with water if taken in empty stomach early morning is useful for those suffering from hyperacidity. (h) Wound turning to Leprosy :- When wounds takes turn to leprosy bark of neem boiled in water becoming a viscus liquid can be taken as medicine simultaneously applying the same fluid externally also acts as a good preventive. (i) Infected or diseased blood :- Infected or diseased blood which is coloquially known as " Rakta dosha " are caused due to various reasons. The symptoms are red or copper coloured patches with itching and swelling on the body. Neem leaves four to five grams boiled in 250 c.c of water for a considerable stretch so that it reduced to 100 c.c and then seperating the water from the leaves. Now this boiled extract is to be taken in small quantity throughout the day. As neem is a good purifier it cures the blood from all impurities. (j) Jaundice :- Neem juice added to 25 to 30 drops of honey should be taken early in the morning in empty stomach during jaundice. Chemical Composition :- (1) Alkaloids viz. Nimbin, Nimbosterin, Nimbecetin, Bakayanin. (2) Fatty acids of various types. (3) An highly pungent essential oil.
