Coming back to dreams vis-a-vis ayurveda according to Charaka Samhita are of seven types. " Dristong srutanu-vutancha prarthitang kalpitang tatha / vabikang doshajanchaiba swapnang suptavidhang viduhh ". The Astang-hriday too mentions dreams to be of seven types but Rishii Prashar goes a step further and states dreams to be of eight types by nature. I shall be discussing the eight types of dreams as prescribed by Prashar. (1) Dreams that arise form observing certain things. If the mind gets attracted to something or certain things but the wish remains unfulfilled returns back in dream. (2) Dreams that arise out of hearing something which leaves an impression in the mind good or bad returns back in dream. (3) These are the ones that arises out of feeling or realisation. Experiences which might be good or bad or success and failures or setbacks that we may have suffered that makes way for realisation or gives rise to feelings which leaves an impact on the mind will surely return in the form of dream. (4) Dreams that arise out of our prayers to god or things which has been solicited or asked or sought for. In fact prayers are also made during sleep when the unconscious mind remains active and that comes back in dream. There are rare instances when people claims to have got a divine instruction or certain medicine for an incurable disease however they are no corroborative evidence.
(5) Dreams that rises out of imagination. A good example can be a beautiful magic show that we have enjoyed or the stunts in a circus remains in the memory for days and casts a magic spell. Certain incidents during our childhood which are hard to forget like an experience of a nice trip to a beautiful place leaves an impression on our mind and remains embedded in our memory only to come back during sleep in dream when mind recapitulates those events. (6) Intutive dreams or dreams that comes from intution. These are predictive dreams by which a person gets a feeling of the occurence of what he has seen in his dream. However the belief comes only if it happens in reality and till then its of no value. (7) Dreams that comes from Faith. By faith it does not mean faith on the almighty only but also includes faith from superstitions too. For instance if a person learns from some reliable source that a particular house in his locality happens to be haunted and he finds every reason to believe that man it shall definitely return to haunt him in his dream. These are dreams from faith. (8) These are dreams that arise out of loss of Equillibrium or parity in the air - bile - phlegm combination and mostly relates to the body.
Do dreams really predict death? An incident from the Ramayana shall serve the purpose but that dosen't mean I wish to corroborate that dreams can predict death however I leave this for my readers to draw their own conclusion. I also take this oppurtunity to give an account of my personal experience regarding this particular topic a little later. Now back to the incident from Ramayana the third and fourth brother "Bharat and Shatrugna" were spending their days at their maternal uncles home when their father " King Dasarath " dies. The elder brother Rama his consort Sita and the brother Laksman were spending their fourteen years forest life. A kingdom cannot be allowed to remain rudderless without the king. Rishi Basista after consulting with the ministers decided to send an emissary to bring back Varat and Shatrugna with specific instruction of not informing them of the tragedy of passing away of King Dasaratha or their elder brother Rama spending their forest life. The emissary was advised to go to Kekeya (the present state of Punjab) and behave with the brothers normaly and casually and simply inform them to come over to Ayodiya to shoulder the responsibility of a very important duty. Varata was at his maternal uncles home woke up one morning with a great depression on his face very unusual to his nature. on being asked the reason he described the very bad dream he had the night before. ' He saw his father the king with his head shaven with a dirty cloth round his waist rolling down the hill in a huge mountain of cowdung but suddenly saw him coming out of the same smiling only to sip oil on his hand and began to swim in the dung. In the next stage he was seen having rice mixed with sesamum. The horrifying part was the seas have dried up, the moon has fallen from the sky, the demons taking control of everything, the whole world has become dark, fires going out all on a sudden the trees and plants are dying the roads are getting cracked. The king was now seen in a black cloth on an ass and a few dark complexioned women were seen assulting him. It was a terrible unforgettable bad dream. However its difficult if not impossible to say if such wierd dreams does have any practical value or can predict something that may happen but modern day psychiatrists analyses such dreams and tries to reach a conclusion. There are instances where dreams of air disaster have come true. A person who went on having the same nightmare for several days of an air disaster ultimately turned true. More than two hundred and fifty people were killed. This incident which I have read in a book took place more than thirtyfive years ago. Now I am going to share my own experience of a nightmare that I had in my life with my readers. By sharing my personal experience I dont want my readers to believe that I have faith or have trust in these but if at all these have any relevance with reality I shall leave that for them to judge. The nightmare that I am talking about I had almost twenty five years ago if not more. But did not have it continously, rather appeared occassionally as a very very bad dream involving my father. I saw him leaving our house for work. It was a different place not the one where I live. I waited and waited for his return getting restless. Days are passing away without any sign of his returning. I repeatedly asked the persons who were around me about his where abouts but none could throw any light. The place I saw in the dream was lowly lit. Then someone whom I didnt recognise commented that he might not return at all. All the while in sleep I could feel the restlessness within me and now jerked up only to see him sleeping next to me. I was relieved.
