A Frustrated Mind |
One of Jung's earlier works discussed in some detail the concept of introverted and extroverted individuals which is one of his lasting contribution in the field of psychology. Jung believed in the validity of religious experience and his system has derived its popular support from those who are repelled by the sexuality and materialism of Freud and who insists that there must be a place for spiritual experience and religious belief. I shall now discuss in short some ailments of the mind those of which are seen or heard almost regularly. The most common amongst them is Frustration. Blocking or thwarting of desires leads to frustration where the individual is unable to realise his or her goal. Lets examine some of the reasons that causes frustration. In the first place there may be external obstacles and internal handicaps. An individual doesn't have proper health, strength, intelligence or resources to accomplish to what he has set his heart on. A young person madly in love with a beautiful young but rich lady but lacks in necessary qualification or income or looks. Someone might be dreaming or has set his heart and mind since childhood to become a doctor but unfortunately couldn't succeed due to lack of merit and intelligence whereas someone from his close relations succeded to become so then this becomes more accute and more so if he is being continously humiliated or taunted for his failure or if his parents makes a comparison between them and repeatedly reminds him of his failure. Secondly in todays world of cut throat competition young people arn't able to achieve what they earnestly want to. Popularity eminence oppurtunities dosen't come to many. The ones who gets a taste of them feels happy while the rest gets frustrated. In fact in the modern world struggle for power wealth and success is perhaps the greatest cause of frustration. Some get more frustrated because they have set their goals too high to achieve and those who are highly ambitious in their life often fall prey to it since only few can reach the top and the rest have to satisfied with moderate success. As an example many young people want to become film stars but hardly a few succeeds and only nurture their failures throughout their lives which adds to their unhappiness. There is another factor particularly in this country due to its high bound social structure where people have to follow the rigid rules of the society. Many young men and women gets highly frustrated because they are forced of not getting married to people of other caste. The effects of frustration varies in their extensiveness and or intensity. Some become violent while others are prolonged which ultimately destroy the mental balance. Normal persons has the ability to endure temporary frustration which in the long run helps to strengthen the character. But it is the universal truth that success does not come easily, it can be won only by overcoming difficulties and frustrations to enjoy a successful life in future. The usual effects of frustrations are anger and aggressiveness. Those who have suffered too much of it become bitter and indulge in backbiting and criticism of everyone. Such individuals just in order to reduce the tension of his or her needs frustration anxiety withdraws altogether from the scene of action. He feels timid passive and seclusive. Because of previous failures and disapointments the person does not lower his aspirations but restricts his movements with the outside world and one important way of withdrawing is to refuse to join competitive activity. Frustrations lead to psychoneurosis. Its actually one of the reasons. It is also known as neuroses. Persons suffering from this type of ailment are unhappy, anxious, inefficient and ineffective. He is in need of urgent psychiatric help. The symptoms are anxiety and fearfulness. They have a timid approach towards life and always fearing some disaster or catastrophe to happen to them. They are over-sensitive and has extreme and intensive reactions to both painful and pleasurable aspects. He is too easily pleased by flattery and readily upset by minor criticism. They are highly sensitive, touch-me nots, and irritable. They are not self reliant and very often seek support and sympathy. Some of them think that perhaps marriage will surely solve their problem only to become dis- illusioned thereafter. They are prone to build high hopes and ambitions which are later belied to their great disappointment. They are always very self conscious and is concerned about their own importance, prestige, and attitude towards others. A neurotic person frequently complains about physical ailments like tiredness, headaches sleeplessness etc. The general outlook is always downish and depressing and employes these symptoms permanently while a normal person gets these temporarily when facing stress situation. Another stage is Hypochondria where the neurotic gives expression to his anxiety and attempts various ways of escape as a solution. Actually hypochondria creates more problems than solutions for the sufferer and in the end the pleasure in life gets seriously impaired.
