Sun The Source Of Life |
So
its amply clear that to be an expert on plants and herbs
for treatment, knowledge on 'Soma Vidya' or thorough conception
on plants and herbs would be essential since Soma is the
king of plant kingdom and who inturn is directly under the
influence of solar energy or the Sun. So the first and
foremost thing would be to know 'Souro Vidya' or the influence
of the sun next is 'Soma Vidya' knowledge on plants and
herbs and the third would be 'Raj Vidya' or the knowledge on
geography for proper application of herbal medicines. The
effect of solar energy is a very vital part in ayurveda
since it describes in detail how the plant kingdom gets
influenced by other planets and nakshatras and the nature and
quality of the soil of its habitation. An example will make
it easier there are various types of flowers whose natural
habitat is water but interestingly Lotus blossoms only during
the day time and white water lily (kumud flower)
during night. They are found in the same place yet their
nature is diametrically opposite one is effected by light and
the other by darkness and quite obviously their medicinal
application would be different. This comes under 'Souro Vidya'.
Souro vidya Soma Vidya and Raj Vidya together came to be
known as "Tridhatu Vidya" during the time of Samhitas. However
this Tridhatu vidya or the science of 'Tridhatu' is not
clearly mentioned in the vedas except in the 1st the 3rd and
the 6th sutras of Rigveda:- "Trirno aswina divyani vesajang
sung jo soma tejasa jath sadastang tridhatu sarma vardhatang".
This tridhatu is 'vaiyu' which means air, 'pitta' which means
bile and 'kafa' which means phlegm. Ayurvedic treatment is
done taking to consideration these three things. Now I shall
come to Soma (See king of all plants post 6 Introduction To Hindu Mythology). Soma is the juice of a milky climbing plant
(Asclepias acida) extracted and fermented forming a beverage
which is offered in libations to deities and drunk by
Brahmans. The exhilerating qualities were grateful to the
priests and gods were thought as equally fond of it. This
Soma juice occupies a large space in Rigveda and one Mandala
is almost fully dedicated to its praise and use. It has been
raised to the position of a deity and represented to be all -
powerful primeval, healer of all diseases, bestower of riches, and even identified with the supreme
being.
The people then whose religion was worship of wonderful
powers and phenomenon of nature perceived that this liquid
has extraordinary power to elevate the spirit and produce a
temporary frenzy under whose influence the individual was
prompted to and capable of doing things beyond his natural
powers. They found in it something divine, it was to their
apprehension "A God" endowing those into whom it entered with
godlike powers. The plant which afforded it came to be known
as the "King Of Plants". The process of preparing it was a
holy sacrifice, the instruments used for it were sacred. Now
coming back to the point the ancient ayurvedists found a basic equilibrium among the living things and in plants for their
healthiness where nature had a profound effect. Discord is the
prime reason which gave rise to diseases. Oneness with nature
would in effect help to lead a robust life and going against
the nature would lead to illness. This is the basic on which
ayurveda is based.
