Dr. Freud Holds that sex plays a very powerful role in life and behaviour. Its not just a lust or urge between a male and a female. After tracing the development of sex in several stages he was successful in showing that sex urges are present at birth too though there is a great deal of difference in expression of sexual behaviour in children and adults. Infants gratify their impulse by sucking the mothers breasts and after reaching adulthood gratify by sexual intercourse. This is an instance of unconscious behaviour and thats why its argued that the unconscious is dominated by sex. Everyone is eager to love certain people and in turn loved by them and if they are unsuccessful they try to gratify their love by fondling birds, dogs, cats etc. Men and women who were frustrated in love in their earlier life compensated themselves of the vaccum created by it by bringing up orphans, exhibiting love for dogs cats or by some other kind of artistry work etc. Infact Freud also postulates that intimate affectionate relations between friends brothers sisters parents and children are also inspired by sex which dominates the unconscious. Human behaviour is always motivated by two factors according to him. The pleasure-pain principle and reality principle. We dont hesitate to do things that gives pleasure and similarly avoid doing things that gives us pain. Only to realise shortly afterwards that indiscriminate use of these principles will land us up in trouble. For instance a student gets pleasure from sleeping long hours only to realise later on that he has not been able to complete his work and started worrying about it. This is a brilliant instance of pleasure-pain principle. On the other hand our conscious life is always guided by reality principle but since the unconscious is governed by pleasure-pain principle it takes no notice of the outside world. In the reality principle some people are afraid of mountain climbing or looking down from great hights etc. The fear is real but they are unable to give a credible reason for it since it lies in the unconscious and they dont know about it. Disturbed sleep for sexual causes ayurveda explains that during the wakeful state if the mind observes or hears anything which is retained by the memory that leads to excitement though not conscious disturbs the equillibrium between the air - bile- phlegm, the sleep gets disturbed at night. The mind even though in sleep gets instigated thereby arousing the desire of seeking pleasure from the opposite sex and results in wet dreams. Freud too explains that any unfulfilled wish or desire in our daily life returns back during sleep and tries to get fulfilled. This is seen as dream. While describing the mind and its related factors in the eyes of ayurveda the the facts or principles laid down by Freud cannot be ignored as they are very corelated. Though by this I dont mean to say that Freud had studied the vedas before and had a profound knowledge of the same he may have read it or may not its not known to me but some of the principles he put forward has an amazing similarity to that put forward by the proponents of this. One is the sequence of dream which i have just mentioned. The facts stated in Brahmavaivarta Purana are similar in nature to what Freud has mentioned. Whatever man sees or thinks over in the conscious state comes back to him in dream. (Sometimes I truely wonder how could the researchers the Muniis or Rishies during the vedic period which dates back thousands and thousands of years could have such profound knowledge on such a complicated subject and that too on human mind. How did they carry out their research work without the help of technology and how could they reach such amazing accuracy is truely a wonder.) So the sences are always in an equillibrium during the conscious state which is absent in the unconscious or in sleep and the sum total of our activities in the wakeful state returns back in dream which remains directionless or rather without any meaning.
